Healthy Out of School Time Grants

February 5, 2018

One goal of the NCRPA Wellness Initiative is to help recreation and park agencies throughout North Carolina adopt and implement evidence-based wellness guidelines - including the Healthy Out of School Time (HOST) Standards. Through their commit to health initiative, NRPA is offering grant funding to help implement HOST Standards in your department! This wellness blog will detail HOST Standards, and provide information regarding the grant opportunity.

The HOST Standards were created by a coalition of out of school time providers and are a great resource to offer healthy snacks and physical activity to children in your recreation programs.

Through a combination of healthy eating and physical activity guidelines, HOST Standards strive to make your out of school time program a place that promotes healthy lifestyles for the staff and children it interacts with.

To learn more about HOST Standards and how your department can become recognized as a HOST site, check out our wellness toolkit page

Adopting a new policy can sometimes be a daunting task. Luckily, the NRPA 2018 HOST Grant is offering funding to help your department implement some of the changes.

The NRPA Host grant supports your HOST expenses like:

• Marketing and promotions within the local community
• Supplies (tables and chairs, for example)
• Foodservice equipment (heating or refrigeration units, for example)
• Program transportation costs
• Staffing to support program implementation
• Other basic needs to create or expand access to out-of-school nutrition programs

If your department qualifies for the grant, I encourage you to submit an application! This could provide a great source of funding to kick-start or boost your HOST program.

Applications are due by 11:59 PM ET on Friday, March 16, 2018, with an anticipated notification date from NRPA by April 6, 2018. Click this link to view the application!

For even more information about the grant, NRPA is hosting a free webinar on February 20th, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Click this link to register!
