10-minute Walk Campaign Updates
NRPA is partnering with The Trust for Public Land and the Urban Land Institute on a nationwide 10-Minute Walk Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to ensure that each person in every US city has a park within a 10-minute walk. This wellness blog gives an updated view on how your department can get involved.
According to NRPA, one and three Americans do not have a park within a 10-minute walk. That’s a number totaling more than 100 million people! The 10-minute Walk campaign aims to change this alarming statistic.
NCRPA would love to see the leaders of your community join this campaign! This link contains a list of over 150 cities across America who have already joined the campaign. There are a few from North Carolina, including Durham, Charlotte, and Greensboro!
In order to assist with the implementation of the 10-minute Walk Campaign, NRPA is offering technical grants of $40,000 to 12-13 cities across America. These grants support planning efforts that help cities increase access to high quality parks within a 10-minute walk. The eligibility requirements from NRPA are as follows:
Be a local government park and recreation agency, (e.g., municipal park and recreation department, tribal recreation department, park district, etc.)
The Mayor of the city applying must be signed on to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign and provide a statement of support for this application.
At least 2 partners (outside of parks and recreation) must partner with you on this project and provide signed statements of support
If you have a local Urban Land Institute and/or Trust for Public Land office in your area, we strongly encourage you to gather letters or statements of support from these offices. These will count towards the two partners.
Applicants must demonstrate a clear interest and commitment to the campaign, strong project management, and leadership support.

Also, share some of these promotional materials to educate your community about the campaign, and to generate more interest in walking efforts. You can also personally sign up to support this effort at this website. Encourage interested citizens, elected officials, and media members to also sign up.
