Hike NC

April 23, 2018

NCRPA is partnering with BCBSNC, NC State Parks, and GetGoingNC to offer a Spring session of Hike NC! This program encourages our citizens to get out and explore parks while being introduced to hiking through guided hikes.

Hikes are free, family-friendly and open to all ages, stages, and levels. A trained guide leads each hike, making it easier for participants to enjoy the outdoors and explore some of the best natural beauty North Carolina has to offer.

As the NCRPA Wellness Initiative has covered in extensively in the past, hiking is a great way to stay healthy. With a number of health benefits, hiking can improve both physical and mental health outcomes.

The Hike NC program is a great way to introduce people to not only the health benefits of hiking, but also your department's parks and trails.

NCRPA is still recruiting departments to host hikes for this session of Hike NC! Below, I've included some information for your department to consider.

What are we looking for in local hike locations?

  • Natural surface trail

  • Distance of hike: 1.5 to 3 miles range (or a little longer)

  • Areas for hosting hikes: Asheville/mountains, Charlotte, Triad, Triangle, Wilmington, New Bern/Greenville.

  • When? Now until June 24.   Hikes on weekends/evenings will receive scheduling priority.

Here are the details for your consideration:

  • Promotion of and registration for these hikes will be coordinated by Hike NC!

  • Training: There is one online training session that hike leaders need to participate in.

  • Week-of requirements: On the Monday before the scheduled hike, the hike leader will receive a notice reminding him/her of the date, time and distance of their hike. One to two days before the hike, the hike leader will be emailed the roster of pre-registered hikers. Print the roster and take note of who attends.

  • Day-of requirements: Arrive 15 minutes early, hoist the Hike NC! banner (which will be sent to you), take attendance. There will be walk-ups: the hike leader needs to have them sign in

  • Post-hike: The hike leader will need to email the roster of who attended the hike.

  • Hike Leader Incentives. Hike leaders receive a Hike NC! cap and t-shirt.

  • Once confirmed, Hike NC! Leaders will work with Joe Miller from GetGoingNC!
