National ParkRx Day is Sunday, April 28th 2019! The NCRPA Wellness Initiative has covered park prescription programs extensively in the past. Check out this wellness blog to learn more about National ParkRx Day, and find out ways to get involved with ParkRx.
According to parkrx.org, ParkRx (or park prescriptions) are programs that include a health or social service provider who encourages their clients to spend time in nature with the goal of improving their health and well-being. In the past few years, the conversation around ParkRx has increased greatly - with nature and time outside being recognized as a great way to encourage healthy lifestyles.
ParkRx.org is an initiative of the Institute at the Golden Gate and considers themselves to be the "leading information hub for park prescriptions and a space for knowledge sharing in the practitioner community." Each year, the initiative holds a National ParkRx Day.
On National ParkRx Day, "healthcare providers, park agencies, community groups, and other Park Prescription program leaders organize events and activities in parks and green spaces across the country, encouraging participants to improve their health and well-being by embracing the health benefits of nature." The goal of National Park Rx Day is to amplify the movement in communities across the country, and to create opportunities for new programs.
While it is likely too late for you to plan a National ParkRx Day celebration in your community, there are still a few great resources to get involved. First, the ParkRx initiative developed a social media toolkit to use on the big day. Incorporate some of the tactics in the toolkit to help raise awareness of ParkRx in your community!
In addition to celebrating National ParkRx Day, the ParkRx initiative has several great resources to help you get involved with park prescription programs! Their park prescription toolkit is a great, interactive step-by-step guide for agencies interested in starting their own park prescription.
Until next time,
